  • Making Hydrogen from Aluminum Powder and Water

Along the way, we ran into Dr. Phillips and his AL+CC chemical process for generating pure Hydrogen (H2).

Dr. Phillips was just approved by the US Patent office and the details can be seen on his web site.

One of the challenges was to find a way to control the chemical process.

The process is simple ... and after heating water to about 180 degrees F in a batch with a small amount of 30 Micron aluminum powder and a small amount of Carbon Catalyst (CC), the chemical action begins and the result is pure Hydrogen (H2).

One idea we have is to control the chemical reaction by "reducing the water level" in the AL+CC reaction cell.

The following diagram shows how we will do this by using the pressure of the fuel cell to automatically raise or lower the feed water supply into the reaction.

We also considered using Aluminum foil rather than powdered aluminum.
This would make it easier to control the contact between the aluminum and water by using an aluminum fuel cartridge.

Aluminum foil will be wound into a spiral-wrap through a small geared press. This will puncture and scar the surface of the foil and will also shape the foil to have fan-fold ridges that will allow space between the wraps.

The result would be a cartridge that would allow the water to flow up and down over the surface area.
This will increase or decrease the chemical action and help control the production of Hydrogen (H2) gas.
